General Notes:
Moses Randolph
PARENTS: Moses FitzRandolph and Rachel Hull
AKA: Born "Moses Fitz Randolph," he dropped the "Fitz".
NAME:
According to Sue Reddell, Moses Fitz Randolph dropped the "Fitz"
because he was related to the King of England and wasn't a
Loyalist. The King had sent Edmund Fitz Randolph, another relative
of the King, to America to act as a spy for him. Moses died in
1776, possibly in the Revolutionary War. None of his children used
the "Fitz," although some did use the initial "F." to signify it.
The brothers of Moses and their childrn kept it. This use of the
surname, Randolph, also results in confusion between them and the
Randolph family of Virginia, which is of Scottish descent. [Note:

CEMETERY: Conger Cemetery, Abbott's Creek, Rowan (now Davidson)

lies in this graveyard. The following refers to this Jonathan
Conger:
"While excavating the right of way of the south-bound railroad on
the farm of Mr. H.L. Holmes in Healing Springs Township, this
county [Rowan, now Davidson], Mr. A.K. Lookabill, who has
employment on the new road, unearthed an ancient grave wherein
reposed the remains of one, Jonathan Conger, so the inscription on
the stone ran, who was among the early settlers on this section.
"The railroad will run directly through this graveyard, and it may
be that other graves will be forced to give up their dead to the
call of progress.
"This particular grave was six feed deep, with a vault of 3 1/2
feet. The bones were intact and properly arranged, with the arms,
according to the old custom, parallel with the body, instead of
crossed, as is the present day custom. The hair was well
preserved, although the date of the stone stated the man died, May
7, 1793, more than 116 years ago. The date of his birth was given
as Jan. 22, 1732, his age being 61 years, three months and sixteen
days. On the stone also was his message from the 18th century to
the 20th century railroad builders, whose surveyors had led them
into the old-time burying ground:
"Remember, man, as you pass by, As you are now, so once was I."

BIOGRAPHY:
It is thought that David Conger Sr. was married twice. There is a
tradition to that effect and that he had a son, Ishmael, by the
first marriage -- that he was only married about a year when his
wife died. An Ishmael Conger does appear in the 1790 census of
Washington county, PA, where Elias D. Conger and David Conger Jr.
(his brother) settled in 1790. Elias D. and David Conger were
half-brothers of Ishmael. CFA I, p. 98
MILITARY:
David died during the Revolutionary War, circumstances unknown.
From the office of the Adjutant General in Trenton, NJ we find the
following:
It is certified that the records of this office show that David
Conger
served as a Private in Middlesex County, New Jersey Militia,
received
certificate 1571 amounting to 28:8:2 for the depreciation of his
continental pay in Middlesex County, New Jersey Militia during the
Revolutionary War.

afterwards, played havoc with his belongings, drinking up four
hogsheads of cider, on pipe of Endeirn, ten gallons of brandy,
seven gallons of Jamaica spirits, one half barrel of cherry rum,

all his fencing, damaged his house, broke fifty panes of glass in
his windows, and ripped up his wife's feather beds, scattering the
good goose down to the winds of heaven."

Jonathan Conger
PARENTS: Jonathan Conger and Ann Enyard
BIRTH-CONFLICT: Abt. 1750; Abt. 1768 (CFA I, 360); Abt. 1745
PARENTS: "This Jonathan Conger cannot be identified. The only
statistics say he was a carpenter from Pennsylvania, and his will
was proved 11 Dec 1815."
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 330-332 - Maxine
Crowell Leonard)
EMIGRATION: He was "from Penn."
SPOUSE: Jonathan Conger was the 2nd spouse of Mary (Frederick)
Glass.
COMMENT: May have been the Jonathan Conger who died in Pike Co.,
IN, and served in the Revolution. (CFA I, p. 328)
RECOLLECTIONS: Who was this Jonathan Conger?
Jonathan Conger and Joshua Harbin had a hunting camp on the White
River, near Buena Visa, now Clay Township, Pike county, Indiana,
and furnished the Fort at Vincennes with meat. He carried a "Seal"
to George Rogers Clark at Kaskaska in 1780.
Jonathan Conger made a coffin for Sebastain Frederick, Sr., who
was scalped in 1786, according to the Frederick Administration
file in the Vincennes courthouse.
Mrs. Ruth Fish, treasurer of the DAR Vincennes (Ind.) Chapter, was
instrumental in Jonathan Conger being recognized as a Patriot. On
3 May 1970 she wrote, "Thought you would like to know that there
are 3 - DAR members in on the Jonathan Conger, Sr. of Gibson
county, Ind. line. They are as follows: Sebastian Conger, from
Wisconsin, just a new member 1970, Betsy Conger Davidson, wife of
Joseph Davidson from Virginia, Matilda Davidson, dau-in-law of
Jonathan Conger, Levi Conger - in process at Washington, D.C."
Mrs. Fish resided at 1319 Vigo Street, Vincennes, Ind. 47591.
Jonathan Conger could have been the son of Jonathan Conger, b.
Abt. 1710, whose birth was approximated as about 1745. This
Jonathan and his two brothers, David, Abt. 1741, and John, Abt.
1743, all served in the Revolution from Middlesex county, New
Jersey. There is no further record of this Jonathan, except he is
mentioned in his father's will in 1779. His brother, David, died
in 1778 and his widow and sons, Elias Darby Conger, 1773, and
David Conger, 1767 moved to Pennsylvania in 1791. The descendants
of Elias moved on to Dearborn county, Indiana. If he was this
Jonathan, he may have preceeded his brothers to Pennsylvania, and
his life as a hunter and soldier would account for marrying a
widow later in life.
He could not have been the Jonathan Conger, Jr. in Rowan county,
North Carolina in 1790, as Jonathan's first child was born in 1790
in Knox county, Indiana. Jonathan of Rowan county seems to have
disappeared after 1790 but his brother, Isaac, settled in McLean
county, Illinois.
Jonathan Conger, b. 1742, had a son, Jonathan, born about 1764, in
Essex county, New Jersey, who moved to Philadelphia before 1822 --
after the death of Jonathan Conger of Indiana.
William Russell Conger of Dallas, Texas, wrote on 23 Aug 1969,
"The Jonathan [Conger] of Pike county, Indiana is in my opinion a
member of the German line around Philadelphia and the Palantine
group started originally by Jacob. I can't see any of our line in
western Ohio or Indiana prior to the migration into Monroe county,
Ohio, nor did any of the group move down from the western reserve
-- too many Indians."
(Jacob Conger of the Palatines arrived, 24 Aug 1728, on the
"Mortonhouse" and settled around Philadelphia. However, no known
descendants of this branch are in this book [CFA I]. Your compiler
feels that Jonathan Conger of Indiana is Jonathan Conger from
Middlesex county, New Jersey, but nothing can be proved at this
time.)

PROBATE: Will of Jonathan Conger recorded 11 Dec 1815, Will Book
A, p. 293,
Gibson County Courthouse, Princeton, IN.
In the name of God, Amen, I Jonathon Conger of the county of
Gibson Indiana Territory (part omitted) do make and ordain this my
last will and testament.
To wit:
I give and bequeath to Mary, my beloved wife, her bed,
bed-clothing, spinning wheels, riding-saddle, and the use of the
loom to be found in the spinning truck and provision and one horse
to ride during her dowry.
Second, I give to my well beloved son Sebastian Conger a tract of
land that lies between Harbin's and Conger's Creek, I also
constitute, make and ordain Samuel Marshall and Sebastian Conger
sole executors of this my last will and testament.
Third, I give to my eldest and dearly beloved daughter, Sebra
Catt, five dollars.
Fourth, I give to my well beloved daughter Hulda Conger her bed,
bed-clothing, one cow and twenty dollars.
Fifth, I give to my well beloved son Levi Conger, the plantation
the said Jonathon Conger lives on, one horse for his own property,
one horse, three cows and one heifer, harness, hoes, harrows, etc.
and whatever the executors think is sufficient to carry on his
farming business without an impediment for four years - sixteen
hundred weight of swine salted down for him and use of the family
for one year, two swine of stock hogs and fifteen for the use of
the family and reasonable quantity of corn and forage sufficient
to feed his stock of this years growth, one stack and a half of
wheat for the use of the family, one stack of oats of this years,
flax and hemp, five acres of grain at the west end of the field,
the household and kitchen furniture, except such as is heretofore
exposed of, sugar-boilers sufficient to boil fifty gallons of
water at one time.
This property I would wish to be inventory as soon as possible
after my decease by my executors, the cartables excepted. The said
Levi Conger is to support his mother according to what is written
above in her name during her dowery and the three youngest
children until they become sixteen years of age, if it is supposed
by my executors and the community at large that said Levi Conger
is running through what I have given him will not in a very short
time be able to support his mother and sisters agreeable to what
is written above that my executors shall take said property out of
said Levi's hand and not return it without a great amendment, and
if he does not mind that, then the property shall be divided
amongst his three youngest sisters.
The swine that is not heretofore exposed of I would wish to be put
up as soon as possible and fattened and sold by order of my
executors, as soon as possible and the horned stock and all other
property not heretofore exposed of to be sold at public auction
and the proceeds to be divided between my four youngest daughters
equally. Likewise the property I have given Levi for four years is
to be divided between my four youngest daughters equally. If
anyone of my children die without lawful heir the proceeds to be
divided between my two youngest daughters.

BIOGRAPHY:
The essay below, by Daniel Lockwood, explains how the family of
Jonathan Conger and Mary (Frederick) Glass was linked to the
family tree of John Belconger after the publication of Volume One
of "The Conger Family of America."
Jonathan Conger born 1745 is a descendent of John Belconger and
Mary Kelly.
John Belconger and Mary (Kelly) 5th child was John Conger.
John Conger b. 24 May 1674 m. Mary Tuttle.
John and Mary (Tuttle) Conger son Jonathan b. 1710 or 1716.
Jonathan m. Ann Engard.
Jonathan and Ann (Engard) Conger son Jonathan b. 1745 and d. 1815.
It is true that the exact place and date of his birth has not been
determined.
The work done by Maxine Leonard, Mrs. Beulah M. Jackson of Miami
FL (not a Conger, but a genealogist who worked with Mrs.
Thompson); Mrs. Leona M. Robertson of Hazleton, IN (Leona May
Frederick, b. 23 Sep 1907 who married Elrick H. Skidmore and Lee
Robertson); and Mrs. Lesba Thompson determined that Jonathan, b.
in 1745, was the son of Jonathan and Ann (Engard) Conger. This
work was done after CFA I was published. These women researched
court records and documents of PA and NJ and determined the
parents of Jonathan. What records and documents they researched I
don't know but when I talked to Maxine and Lesba on different
occasions they both assured me that they were correct.
Mrs. Thompson, born 17 Aug 1912 at Evansville, IN, was married on
26 June 1933 to D.B. Thompson. She published, "Jonathan Conger of
Knox and Gibson Counties and his Descendants," which lists about
1600 descendants. I am not aware of which libraries might have
copies.
I remember Maxine Leonard telling me, almost in these words,
"After years of searching records, documents, census, probate,
church, family bibles, immigration, ship records at ports of
entry, records in England, there is no doubt that Jonathan of Knox
county, Indiana is the son of Jonathan and Ann Engard Conger."
[Extracted by Daniel Lockwood from the book of Mrs. Thompson.]
Jonathan Conger migrated from PA where he was listed as a
carpenter to Indiana sometime around 1774. In the Spring of 1778
Jonathan Conger and Joshua Harbin had a camp located a short
distance above what is now Giro, Indiana, on the south side of
White River. They were engaged as hunters, supplying fresh meat to
Ft. Sackville, formerly Fort Vincent or Fort Vincennes, located in
what was then a part of Great Britain's Province of Canada.
These two hunters were sympathetic to the cause of the American
Colonists, and with the coming of George Rogers Clark, the
conqueror of the Northwest, this sympathy became more evident.
Jonathan Conger was so trusted that in 1780 he was selected by
John Doge, then at Ft. Vincent, to carry to Col. Clark, then at
Express Falls, Ohio his official seal.
Jonathan Conger was listed as a settler of Knox County, Indiana
Territory, as early as 1780. His name is included in a roster of
the militia at Vincennes, as returned by Major Francois Vigo, on
19 July 1790. The men listed on this roster saw service against
the Indians through the campaign of Tippecanoe in 1811.
(Comment by Daniel Lockwood, "This battle is by far the most
important battle as far as changing American History than any
battle ever fought in America. If this battle had never been
fought there is a good chance that the Civil War would never have
occured, and if so it would have been pushed back to the late
1800's.")
Sometime in 1788/89, Jonathan Conger married the daughter of
another Revolutionary patriot, Mary Frederick, widow of John Glass
and the mother of two small sons. Her father, Sebastian Frederick,
Sr., served as a Ranger on the Frontiers 1778-83, Washington
County, PA. In 1785, after residence in Washington County, PA
since about 1762, he migrated to Knox County, Indiana Territory,
with his daughter, Mary. In 1786/87, he was scalped by Indians one
night when he was guarding a sugar camp about six miles southeast
of Vincennes.

Thompson.]

CONFLICT-ERROR: The Ancestral File says he was born in Dobbs Co.,
NJ and the Ancestral File seems to speculate that his children
were born in Dobbs Co., NC. The Ancestral File also lists the
place of his marriage and Dobbs Co., NC. The 1995 Rand McNally

North Carolina. What happened to Dobbs County?

in position to be a sibling of this John Sutton. His information:
b. 16 Jan 1717, Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., NJ and died at the same

"The Conger family was worthily represented in the army by Lt.
Samuel Conger. The type of man the lieutenant was is revealed by
an incident. When the war closed, the country considered the
subject of bestowing pensions on its heros. Lt. Conger was asked
if he wanted one. Promptly he replied, "No. I want no pension, at
least not as long as I can shoot a shuttle."
He was a weaver by occupation and disdained to ask for government
support.
Joshiah Beach was a weaver and farmer in Newark, [NJ], with a shop
on Broadway, across from Samuel Conger, whose weaving shop was
next door to the Bruen's cabinet making shop.

PROBLEM: Ancestral File of Jan 1996 lists a second wife for Peter

perhaps in Ont. Married in Ont. They had a daughter: Jane Stinson

Can this be proven? What evidence is there that Peter DeSigney
Conger ever lived in Ontario, Canada?
In CFA I, p. 425 there is a second Peter DeSigney Conger listed,
born 16 Jan 1770 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ. He was the the
nephew of Peter DeSignery Conger, b. 1737. The parents of the

Peter married, Elizabeth Seymour and they had a child, Jane
Stinson Conger, b. Abt. 1792, who married Moses White on 20 Mar
1810.
BIOGRAPHY: Tradition is that Peter DeSigney Conger, like his
brother David, was also a Tory and that he was killed near his
home during a battle which raged near the place. It is said that
he left his house one evening and never returned. His son, David,
later removed to Indiana, where he died after raising a large
family.
Records of the Presbyterian Church, New Providence, NJ state,
"Polly Crane Conger, daughter of DeSigney, baptized Jan. 19, 1785
'on his wife's account'." The entry is also made that Polly Crane
Conger, an infant child of DeSigney Conger died Jan. 19, 1785.
The records further state that DeSigney Conger died Dec. 7, 1785.
There were probably other children.

BIOGRAPHY:
Joseph Conger was the fifth signer of the Articles of Association
of the Freeholders and Inhabitants of Pequannock Township, Morris
county, New Jersey in May 1776. (New Jersey Archives, Vol. X, p.
717)
In 1784, he was one of the Proprietors of a school taught by
George Harris, at Rockaway, Morris county, NJ. Among the scholars
at this school were James and Rhoda Conger, childred of Joseph
Conger. (History of Morris County, p. 340)
Joseph was a member of the Rockaway Church in 1779. Mrs. Leonard
concludes that Rhoda was the child of Joseph's first wife, Rhoda.
He, without doubt, removed from Morris county to Knox county, Ohio
prior to the death of his unmarried son, James, because had he
been in New Jersery he would probably have probated the estate
himself. [Note: No source citation for this conclusion.]

CONFLICT:
Stephen W. Conger served in the Revolution from New Jersey,
according to Stryker, "Jerseymen in the Revolution," p. 548, but
nothing is given to indicate from what county he enlisted. This
Stephen W. Conger was either the son of John Conger, b. 1724 or
Hanover, Morris county, [NJ], or the son of Samuel Conger, b.
1715, as they were the only two Stephen Congers known of during
that period.
[Researcher,] Charles Leslie Conger places this Stephen W. Conger
as the son of Samuel.
Stephen Conger, son of John Conger, b. 1724, and Sarah Tuttle of
Hanover, served in the Revolution in 1777 as a Private and
Sergeant Major in the 1st North Carolina Continental Line, as was
also Acting Adjutant. This is a matter of record in the War
Department at Washington, DC, and Mrs. Geanie Perrin of New
Orleans, LA has a membership in the DAR through this service.
[Note: Mrs. Perrin's lineage doesn't appear to be listed in CFA I.
REH]
After this North Carolina service, Stephen Conger returned to
Morris county, New Jersey, where in 1781 he was a member of the
Rockaway Presbyterian Church. There is a tradition among the
descendants that he was married in New Jersey before his North
Carolina service, but upon his return to New Jersey he did not
live with his wife and there was no issue from this marriage. It
is not known when or where he married, Pimina.
Stephen [Conger] was mentioned in the will of his father, from
whom he received a legacy of thirty pounds. The only other mention
we find of him in Morris county records is that on 26 Oct 1790
Stephen Conger of Hanover sold to Bernard Smith of Pequannock
Twp., Morris county, a part of a tract of land that he had bought
from Stephen Jackson, the remainder of which he had sold 7 Apr
1790 to brother, David Conger (Morris County, [NJ] Deeds). It was,
perhaps, about this time the he returned to North Carolina.

COMMENT: The account of Stephen Conger living in both New Jersey
and North Carolina and moving back and forth between the two
places, found on pages 473-474 of CFA I, is interesting and very
unusual. It is unfortunate that little source citation was
provided which would help in proving the conclusion that this was
the same person. [REH]

General Notes:
Thomas Conger
PARENTS: John Conger and Sarah Tuttle
MILITARY: Thomas Conger had no Revolutionary War record that we
know of, the name not being mentioned by Stryker. (CFA I, p. 486)
CHURCH_AFFILIATION: Thomas Conger was a trustee in the Rockaway
Presbyterian Church [Rockaway, NJ] during the years 1794-8,
1802-10, 1812-13 (History of Morris County, NJ, p. 340). He was
also mentioned in Rockaway Records as being an Elder in the
Presbyterian Church.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 487 - Maxine
Crowell Leonard)
OCCUPATION: Said to have been a blacksmith, silversmith, and maker
of edge tools. (CFA I, p. 487)
CHILD-QUESTION: Did Thomas Conger also have a daughter, Charity
Conger, who married James Lockwood? (See CFA I, p. 112) She is not
listed in the Thomas Conger family on p. 486 of CFA I.
MARRIAGE-CONFLICT:
On page 199, "Rockaway Records," it states that Thomas Conger
married Lydia Beeman and that they had the following name
children: Harriet born 1796, John P. born 1798, William born 1802,
Phebe, born 1803, and Hannah born 1807. All of them were baptized
in the Rockaway Presbyterian Church on 25 Apr 1809.
[Researcher] Charles Leslie Conger wrote, "We are certain,
however, that the Rockaway Records are wrong in naming Lydia
Conger as being the mother of the above named children of Thomas
Conger."
"When the will of Thomas Conger, dated 18 September 1828, was
drawn, he named his wife, Phebe Conger. We also find that Phebe
Conger joined with her husband, Thomas Conger, in the execution of
deeds in Morris county, [NJ] as early as the year 1800. Which, to
the writer, is convincing proof that she, Phebe, not Lydia, was
the mother of the previously named children of Thomas Conger."
"A great deal of study has been given to the apparent mix-up in
the name of the wife of Thomas Conger. In the opinion of the
writer, Thomas Conger married twice, and the name of the first
wife was, Lydia Beeman, and that they married as early as 1780,
and that they had children, David B. and Diadema, and perhaps
others."
"Both David Conger, who married Hannah Lockwood, and Diadema
Conger, who married Joel Brown, at Rockaway, Morris, NJ, 6 Jan
1810, were the only unidentified Congers of that period at
Rockaway."
"It will be noted that his son, David B. and daughter, Diadema
(Conger) Brown, are not mentioned in his will, nor are his
daughters, Harriet and Phebe. It is certain that Harriet was
living and was listed as a member of the Presbyterian Church of
Rockaway, and she married a man named, Howell."
In later years an old family Bible [CFA I, does not state who
owned the Bible], printed by Sage and Clough for William Durrell
in 1803, verified that Thomas' first wife was Lydia Beaman [sic]
and the second was Phoebe Pierson. The names and birthdates of
children were given, but not mention of Charity [Conger], who
married James Lockwood. Perhaps the reason David B. was not
mentioned in the will was because he had removed to Mt. Clemmens,
Michigan and the family didn't know how to reach him.

BIOGRAPHY: In 1804, among those engaging to pay $2 quarterly for
every child subscribed to the school were David and Thomas Conger.

BIOGRAPHY:
On January 26, 1813, funds subscribed to build a school in
Rockaway: Thomas Conger, $10. He was a trustee of the Presbyterian
Congregation.
Levi Styles went to Thomas Conger, a blacksmith at Rockaway, to
get a scythe. He got one for which he paid $3, and Conger
warranted it for six years; he used it every season for five years
and then sold it for $2.50 (showing that in those early days there
were workers who understood their business).

LAND: The name of Thomas Conger appeared frequently in the Morris
County, [NJ] Deed Records, usually in connection with transfers of
land in Pequanach Township. He and his wife, Phebe, are mentioned
in the year 1800, when they deeded some land to Gabriel Halsey of
Southhampton, Long Island.

PROBATE: His will, dated at Rockaway, [NJ], 18 Sep 1828, leaves
the whole estate to his wife, Phebe; in case Phebe died before
him, he left daughter, Hannah, $100 and the rest of his estate to
sons, John and William. Executors of the estate were wife, Phebe,
and sons, John P. and William. The will was proved 11 Jan 1833.

BIOGRAPHY: Among those engaging to pay $2 quarterly for every

CONFLICT:
There is no record of any military service performed by any David
Conger from Morris county, New Jersey, in the Revolution that we
have been able to find (1925?). We have been informed that the New
Jersey Revolutionary War records, and some census records, were
destroyed [when] burned by the British, when they captured the
City of Washington in the War of 1812. However, the late Adjutant
General Stryker of New Jersey, compiled a list of officers and men
serving in the Revolution from New Jersey.
David Conger, son of John and Sarah Tuttle Conger, born in 1760,
would have been rather young to be a Captain. Crayon states that
he had no service in the Revolution, but that he was a Captain of
militia on general graining days after the war.
Mrs. Louise Conger Dietrich has a DAR Lineage (Vol. 78, p.
156-157) traced to [a] David Conger who was a Private in the
Middlesex County New Jersey Militia. Chances are that this is in
error -- this was probably the David born about 1741, son of
Jonathan and Ann Enyard Conger, who died during the Revolution in
1778. David, 1760, was living in Rockaway, NJ in 1793. (See David
Conger, 1760 & Elizabeth Blue) [Note: As of November 1999,
Richard E. Henthorn had been unable to find the lineage of Mrs.
Louise Conger Dietrich in the CFAs.]

PROBATE:
The will of David Conger of Hanover Twp., Morris county, New
Jersey, carpenter, dated 16 Jan 1807 and probated 21 Feb 1807,
leaves to wife, Elizabeth, the use of all of his estate, real and
personal, provided that she take upon herself the care, expense,
and trouble of bringing up and educating my small five daughters,
until they are eighteen. The names of the children being: Mary,
Emily, Delia, Cynthia and Elizabeth.
The will also mentions three daughters viz., Sally, Anne and
Phebe, and forgives them "all that I have against them on my

None of the sons are mentioned in the will.
The executors were the wife, Elizabeth, and friend, Col. Joseph
Jackson. The witnesses were Stephen Jackson and James Jackson.
The inventory taken 18 Feb 1807 by John Hinchman and Job Tallmage,
showed a valuation of $435.50.

BIOGRAPHY:
In 1776, Joseph Conger served as a Private in Capt. William
Hubbell's company of Col. David Waterbury's Regt. of Conn.
Volunteers, and may have served in other Connecticut forces. In
the same company there was a Jesse Conger serving. He was probably
the brother of Joseph, for whom there is no further record, unless
he was the Jesse Conger who removed to Cincinnati, Ohio.
After his marriage to Phoebe Eggleston he apparently remained in
that vicinity for some time. When the first U.S. Census was taken
in 1790 he is shown as being the head of a family in Columbia, New
York, at which time the family consisted of one male over 16,
himself, three males under sixteen (Jesse, Abel and Parley), one
female over sixteen, his wife.
He removed later to Stockwell, Oneida county, New York, where he
died.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Job Conger was named as one of the executors of his father's will,
dated 19 Feb 1777. In 1778 a roll of the Freemen of Danby was
placed on the Town Records and in this list we find the name of
Job Conger and his brother Enoch Conger.
Wiliams' "History and Map of Danby", page 129, states that Job
Conger, whose name appears on the roll of 1778, settled on a farm
in Danby, and that he was a brother of Enoch and Gershom Conger,
but the latter is not listed as a son of Job.
An old land lease, now in the possession of William Pierce Conger
of Burlington VT, is a rather interesting document. This lease was
from Len Allen to Asa Weyman of Georgia, Vt., for lot 50 in the
town of St. Albans, Chittenden County, VT, dated 15 Nov 1788 at
"One Barleycorn for each acre the first four years; then three
pence per acre per year, increasing one penny per acre per year
until the amount was 9 pence per acre; then 9 pence per acre in
perpetuity. All taxes to be paid by lessee."
This lease was transferred to Joseph Kellogg, no date. And
transferred by him to John Kellogg, 20 Apr 1791, who in turn
transferred it to Job Conger and Samuel Niles, no date. On 8 Feb
1796 Samuel Niles sold his interest in the lease to Job Conger for
60 pounds lawful money. This sale and transfer was witnessed by
Potter and Noel Conger sons of Job Conger.
On 13 Dec 1821 Job Conger transferred this lease to his son Reuben
Conger for one dollar love and affection, reserving the right of
firewood and pasture, to himself and wife.
Abel and Oliver Conger signed quit claim deeds for 1/2 of property
inheritance after Job's death. Abel's was dated 14 Feb 1829 at St.
Albans, Vt, stating his residence as Bangor, Franklin County, NY
Oliver's was dated 24 Dec 1828 in St. Albans, residence Bangor,
also.
Achsah Conger and husband, Jacob Beeman are buried at
Hinsdillville Cemetery in Bennington, VT. Jacob died 15 Feb 1868,
age 88.
Robah Potter was the daughter of Capt Oliver Potter of Danby who
commanded a company in Col Seth Warner's Regiment in an expedition
sent by the Colonies against Canada in 1775.
The following story was compiled by Marion Conger Barton:
All three brothers, Job (1751-1827), Gershom (1767-1837) and Asher
(1761-1813) Conger took part in the Revolutionary War. They served
in Captain Stephen Calkin's Co. in Col Ira Allen's Regiment in Oct
1780, with Gershom and Asher serving in Captain Ebenezer White's
Co in Col Ira Allen's Regiment of Milita at Castleton in Oct 1771.
Most of the service seen by Vermonters in the Revolutionary War
was for short periods of time - when there was a definite task to
be performed or when danger threatened. Then they were discharged
so they could go home and look after their families and work their
farms. By law the militia could be called into service at any
time.
In September 1778 the New York Congress had ordered the purchase
of coarse green cloth in order to provide a coat for each member
of the regiment of Green Mountain Boys with red cloth for facings,
and to procure two hundred twenty-five coats of a large size.
(From Crockett's History of Vermont Vol 1).
Their rate of pay was 2 pounds per month with travel rate at four
pence per mile. In 1785 or 1786 American money was based on the
decimal system but everyone was so accustomed to thinking in terms
of pounds, shillings, and pence it couldn't be changed over-night.
Vermont coined her own money from 1785 to 1788.
Job and Robah moved to St. Albans in 1800 via Plattsburg, NY. They
and their children were in the St. Albans census in 1800. Job was
on the Grand List for $248.75 - improved land being assessed at
$1.75 an acre and polls at $20. Militia and calvary horses were
exempt. A military troop of horses came into being soon after 1800
and was kept up until 1828, the year after Job died.
Only the officers wore uniforms. They cut dashing figures in a
yellow cap with gold band and red feather, red flannel jacket, and
yellow breeches. Captain Jason Kellog Conger, Potter's son, was
one of these officers. Later on he served on the Northern Frontier
in Jan and Feb of 1838. By 1828 with a population of 2400, three
companies were maintained. Every man 18 years of age had to obey
the warning by being present and armed in some way - guns, poles,
whip stocks or ax-halves. Many brought codfish bound to their
knapsacks for lunch. They engaged in sham fights to be prepared in
case of the real thing.
(From "A Centennial History of St. Albans," by H.K. Adams)
When Job died 3 Nov 1827 age 73, he was probably taken to the
cemetery in a lumber wagon since there were no hearses until 1840.
I wonder if the early custom of the 'tolling bell' was followed:
three times three for a man, two times three for a woman and two
times two for a child. The bell afterwards would toll the age,
with the belfry window opened toward that part of the town from
which the death came. (H.K. Adams)
Soon after Job's death, Robah went to live with her daughter,
Sophia Webb, in Montana, where she died 2 Dec 1834.
The friendly relations that characterized the lives and dealings
of the people in Northern Vermont and above the border in Canada
didn't extend to or exist between the two governments. Great
Britain was jealous of the rapid growth of strength and power in
the US and committed many offensive acts-among which was searching
American vessels and under the guise of claiming the personnel on
board to be subjects of the King, forced them into service of
Great Britain, even against well established proof of their
identity. This resulted in an Embargo Act March 12, 1808,
prohibiting commercial intercourse with Great Britain and her
dependencies. This worked a particular hardship on Northern
Vermonters who depended largely on this trade. As a result there
was extensive smuggling carried on. Georgia became known as
"Hell's Gate" among the smugglers. On one occasion intelligence
reached customs officers in Georgia that a gang of smugglers would
attempt to pass through during the night, A group including Potter
and Reuben Conger, had assembled at a Mr. Blodgett's house about
one half mile south of the town line on the main road from St.
Alabans to Georgia to intercept and overhaul them.
A large party of "diversionists" gathered at the tavern about one
mile south of St. Albans to distract government officers so the
smugglers could get by on the other route. The government party,
seeing themselves badly outnumbered, kept quiet but that didn't
satisfy the raiders. They beat Blodgett up badly, bound the
Congers hand and foot, piled them into a wagon and started on
their way. After a few anxious hours when they were taken across
the river at Hyde's Ferry they were finally rescued by the Post
party.
The Conger family was destined to become inter-related to the Post
family by marriage at a little later date.
(From "History of Franklin & Grand Isle Counties," by Aldrich
and Hemenway's "Gazetteer")
Some time around 1811, Job Conger became the Methodist class
leader in the St. Albans area, an appointment held for many years,
holding the meetings in the home in the winter and the barn in
summer. This was about a mile west of the town.
Two of his sons-in-law were prominent Methodist preachers in
Vermont - John B. Stratton, Lorinda's husband, traveled the St.
Albans circuit in 1812. He served many areas since, at that time,
rules governing Methodist itinerancy required, "That the minister
be appointed but one year at a time and in no case to exceed two
years in succession at the same place." He was presiding elder of
the Burlington district, and appointment on the St. Albans circuit
in 1818, and became presiding elder of what was then called the
Champlain district embracing all western Vermont and much more in
1823. The residence of the presiding elder of the Champlain
District became Charlotte in 1819 and Rev. Stratton resided there
at some time between 1819 and when the parsonage burned in 1830.
A note from Mt. Holly in 1824 states "the church has been favored
with the labor of many able and talented preachers, among whom may
be named such men as John B. Stratton-". Rev. Jacob Beeman,
Achsah's husband, is mentioned frequently and favorably in the
reports of circuit preachers. A class in Bristol united with a
class in Monkton and in 1813 a class was formed at the village of
Bristol with Jacob Beeman holding the first quarterly meeting when
in charge of the Charlotte Circuit in 1816. A temperance meeting
in Feb 21, 1842, addressed by Rev. Beeman resulted in 20 names
obtained, pledging abstinence.
No doubt it was through visiting her sisters' families when they
lived in the parsonage at Charlotte that Sophia met her future
husband, Daniel Webb.

In the cold year of 1816 (frost every month) a number of
inhabitants of St. Albans clubbed together and sent Pierpont
Brigham to Chambly in Canada to purchase a sloop load of wheat.
This was delivered to St. Albans Bay at a cost of $2.50 per
bushel. In 1817 seed corn sold in St. Albans at $4.00 a bushel;
flour imported from Troy and Montreal sold at $15.00 to $17.00 a
barrel.
The cold season gave a great impetus to the spirit of emigration
to the milder climate of the west, and a number removed to the
"new" state of Ohio. Emigration progressed to such an extent that
during the decade ending in 1820 the population increased by 27.
Pierpont Brigham, Louisa Conger's husband, and Richard Sackett,
Keziah Conger's husband, both privates, saw action at the battle
of Plattsburgh Sep 11, 1814. The battle could be seen from Aldis
Hill in St. Albans.

Enoch Conger
PARENTS: Enoch Conger and Berzillah Coddington
RESIDENCES: As of Jul 1794, Danby, VT
PROBATE: Enoch Conger was named as one of the executors of his
father's will, dated 19 Feb 1777. He sold his interest in his
father and mother's estate to his brother, Coddington Conger, on 5
Jul 1794. (CFA I, p. 160)
BIOGRAPHY: William's "History and Map of Danby," mentions Enoch
Conger as follows (page 129):
"Enoch Conger settled on the farm now occupied by Isaac Kelley. He
built the present dwelling house in 1812. He was twice married,
first to Ruth, daughter of David Irish, and second to Hannah
Kelley. Although obliged to overcom the hardships and privation
incident to all new settlements, by great industry and personal
endurance he succeeded in establishing a pleasant home here, and
became a man of considerable influence. He joined the Quaker
Church, then quite numerous, and in 1820 removed to the north part
of the state.
His children were: David, Noah, Hiram, and Lydia. David married
Rachel, daughter of Isaac Wilbur and removed to Collins, New York.
The Quaker Church was organized by the first settlers, at an early
date. And for some time, the meetings were held in a log house
'which stood on a hill.' In 1785, the first Quaker Church was
erected. And among the list of early members of the society is the
name of Enoch Conger.

CHILDREN: It is thought that Enoch Conger had other children, as a
Freelove Conger witnessed a deed. (CFA I, p. 160)
MARRIAGE: His second wife was Hannah Kelley of Danby, of whom we
have no record, and apparently there was no issue from this
marriage. (CFA I, p. 160)
EMIGRATION: About 1820, Enoch removed to Hinesburg, Chittenden,
Vermont, where he died 5 Dec 1826. It is thought that he went
there to live with his daughter, Lydia, wife of Caleb Randall.
(CFA I, p. 160)

General Notes:
Asher Conger
PARENTS: Enoch Conger and Berzillah Coddington
COMMENT: There are two places named Hinesburg, VT. Based on the
fact that this Asher Conger is buried at Ferrisburg, Addison Co.,
VT it is likely that he lived in Hinesburg, Chittenden Co., VT
which is adjacent to Addison county. For this Asher Conger, CFA I,
did not specify which Hinesburg was involved and spelled the name
with an "h" on the end. Records of other Congers in CFA I do
indicate that the family lived in Chittenden county, VT.
RESIDENCES: As of Jul 1794, Hinesburg, VT
MILITARY: The first mention of Asher Conger at Danby, VT is in
October 1780, when he served in Captain Stephen Calkin's Company
of Col. Ira Allen's Regiment of Militia. And he also served in
Capt. Ebeneezer Wilson's Company. (Goodrich: Vermont Revolutionary
Rolls, p. 372). (CFA I, p. 31)
LAND: On 27 Oct 1787, Asher Conger of Hinesburg, Addison, VT,
deeded to Henry Wilbur of Danby, VT, 24 acres in Danby, being the
Southwest corner of 50 acres of land laid out to Enoch Conger as
fourth division in the right of William Barton (Right No. 35). On
the same date, 27 Oct 1787, Asher Conger deeded to Abel Irish, his
brother-in-law, of Danby, 11 acres of land in Danby, being part of
the same lots as the preceding item. These deeds indicate that
between 1782 and 1787 Asher Conger had moved to Hinesburg, VT.
One of the descendants writes that at the time of moving to
Hinesburg the country was a wilderness, and he had to make his own
road as he went. There were but three families in that vicinity
when this removal was made.

General Notes:
Benjamin Conger
PARENTS: Daniel Conger and Mary
BIOGRAPHY:
Benjamin Conger was a Revolutionary Soldier. He entered the
service as a Private in 1776 for 3 months in Morristown, New
Jersey. He was in the company of Capt. Seeley, under Col. Martin
and Gen. Sterling. He marched to Bargan (?), then to New York,
then to Long Island, where he was in a battle, then back to New
York, to Fort Washington, to White Plains and was guarding some
prisoners until his 3 months were up, then discharged.
In 1777, he enlisted again under the same Captain, under the
command of Co. Lindley for three more months. He marched from
Morristown to near Elizabethtown where he fought in three battles.
From there he marched to near Woodbridge where he was in a battle
at Strawberry Hill and another above Woodbridge at Asward
(worth?). He was then discharged a second time.
He volunteered again in 1778 at Elizabethtown in the artillery
under Capt. Clark to serve until the close of the war. He was not
in a battle; it was a guard artillery stationed at Elizabethtown.
He helped cut off the retreat of the Monmouth Battle and returned
back to Elizabethtown where he remained until the close of the war
in 1781.
After the war, Benjamin Conger lived in Morristown, New Jersey for
several years. He then moved to Henry Co., Virginia and then to
Rockingham Co., NC. It is presumed that he was the Benjamin Conger
living in Rockingham in the 1790 census, but it could havew been a
son of Jonathan, 1732, who settled in Rowan county, NC.
At any rate, this Benjamin Conger moved to Pendleton District, SC
where he lived until 1821 or so. He then moved to Gwinnett county,
GA, where he lived until 1840. He received land in the 1832
Cherokee and Gold Land Lottery. It was taken up (deeded to him by
Cherokee County) on 24 May 1841. On 1 Dec 1846, Zachariah Conger
of Cobb County sold it (40 acres) to Edmund Coffee for $100. It
now belongs to the Georgia Power Company.
Benjamin's close friends were in the Suwannee Baptist Church at
Buford, GA, so it is likely that Benjamin and Rachel were
Baptists.
It isn't know whether Benjamin was an educated man, but he could
write his name. His son, Simeon, wrote very well.
There is still no proof that Benjamin was the son of Daniel
Conger. But, he was born at approximately the same time. The
names, Jonas, Simeon, and Benjamin were very common in this line
of Congers before Benjamin, and these names are prevalent among
the descendants of this Benjamin.
The Morristown, NJ records have information concerning the other
children of Daniel, but nothing on Benjamin after he married a
"Phoebe Armstrong." Perhaps he did marry her and she died -- and
Rachel was a second wife. Or perhaps Rachel's surname was,
Armstrong.
The 1810 cenus indicates there were two more boys and one girl
that can not be accounted for. One of the missing sons was
probably, John Conger, b. 1806 in North Carolina, listed in the
1860 Cherokee County census.
Benjamin Conger died on 21 Dec 1841 in Cobb County, GA

BURIAL-QUESTION: Ancestral File lists the burial place of David
and Elizabeth Conger as, Morristown, Morris Co., NJ. Were their
remains really returned from Indiana to New Jersey? Who can cite a
source?
COMMENT-CONFLICT: Apparently there is some question about the
facts surrounding this David Conger. The lack of source citations
concerning the information recorded about David Conger contributes
to the problem. [REH]
RELATIONSHIP: Omer T. Conger, 1835, of Indianapolis, IN, a
grandson of David and Elizabeth Conger, made quite an extensive
study of the genealogy of the descendants of his grandparents. He
spoke of them having 13 children, but only 11 are listed. (CFA I,
p. 99)
DEATH-CHILDREN: The Register of Deaths of Morristown Presbyterian
and Baptist [sic], gives the following: Mary, daughter of David
Conger, fits, d. July 28, 1796 (no age). Also, child of David,
fits, Oct. 3, 1805 (no age). These children do not seem to tie in
with the other David Conger, 1760, of Morristown, NJ.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 99 - Maxine
Crowell Leonard)
BIOGRAPHY: By Omer T. Conger, apparently with additional comments
by Maxine Leonard.
Not much is known of the Morris County, NJ life of David Conger,
other than he was said to have been a Captain of a militia
company. This may have been the David Conger, 1760, who married
Elizabeth Ayres.
Omer T. Conger goes on to say that his grandfather was a Private
in Capt. James Rhea's Co. 7th Reg of Inf USA. He enlisted 7 Nov
1808 for five years, transferred to Gilbert C. Russell's company
26 Mar 1810; promoted to Sgt. 9 Oct 1810. Reduced to Corp. 1 May
1812; promoted to Sgt. 12 Feb 1813. Discharged and re-enlisted at
New Orleans on 13 Feb 1813, for the war, as a Private in Captain
Uriah Blue's Company. Discharged at New Orleans, LA, 8 Apr 1815.
It doesn't seem likely that this is the same David. There were
several David Congers in the New Jersey area who could have had
this service. This David, 1760, had at least 9 children. It is
questionable that with a family of this size he would enlist for
five years at the age of 48.
In 1801, he inherited his father's homestead of 90 acres.
Omer T. Conger describes his grandfather as "tall and strong.
Being the eldest son he inherited all his father's estate, English
fashion, leaving the other three children poor. He married
Elizabeth Blue, of excellent spirit, of North German descent. A
small woman, but very staunch, with blue eyes, who could stand
inside a half bushel measure, and shoulder a bag containing two
bushels of wheat. She was the salt of the earth in spirit.
David was not successful in finances, and his estate became
involved, and when he reached Indiana, in 1820, with a family of
13 children, he had barely enough money to buy a quarter section
of land from the government. He lost about $4,000 on the journey
west; nobody knew how, and he never told. He was a corker on a
drunk and smashed things generally.
He and his wife both died about 84 years of age, in Dearborn
county, Indiana.
Perhaps he could have been the David with the military service
mentioned. He does appear to have been irresponsible ... being
reduced in rank could have come from drinking. One thing for
certain is that Elizabeth did not lead a dull life!
